The Physics of Absolute Concentricity

At Cameron Gunsmith, we know that your rifle is only as accurate as its barrel interface. When mounting a modern muzzle brake, compensator, or suppressor, true accuracy isn't just about cutting clean threads—it is about achieving absolute concentricity with the bore's centerline, not the outer diameter of the barrel profile.

Standard commercial machine shops cut threads relative to the outside of the steel tube. However, factory barrel bores are rarely perfectly centered inside the steel profile. If threads are cut off-center, your muzzle device will sit slightly crooked. This introduces the catastrophic risk of a baffle strike or uneven gas clipping as the bullet exits the crown, throwing your grouping wild.

Our in-house gunsmithing lathe setups utilize precision dial indicators and custom-fit pilots to align the barrel directly along its internal bore axis down to 0.0001". Whether you are hunting nilgai in the brush country or competing in long-range precision matches across South Texas, our barrel work ensures perfectly parallel gas expansion and maximized velocity consistency.

Our Core Barrel Machining Services

Service Type Technical Specifications Primary Benefit
Precision Muzzle Threading Dial-indicated bore alignment, Class 3A fit cut to standard pitches (1/2x28, 5/8x24, etc.). Perfect shoulder seat for suppressors, eliminates baffle strike risks completely.
Match-Grade Barrel Swaps Action truing, precision headspace configuration via headspace gauges, custom shoulder cutting. Transforms stock factory actions into high-end sub-MOA competition or hunting rigs.
Muzzle Recrowning Precision 11-degree target crowns or standard step crowns cut perfectly perpendicular to the bore. Ensures perfectly symmetrical gas pressure release behind the bullet skirt as it departs.
Shotgun Choke Threading Internal wall thickness verification, precision alignment to pattern requirements. Allows old fixed-choke family heirlooms to utilize modern interchangeable choke tubes safely.

When Does Your Rifle Need Custom Barrel Work?

If you notice your rifle groups are stringing horizontally or widening as the barrel warms up, it could point to a stressed barrel shank or uneven contact with the action shoulder. Furthermore, a nicked or corroded muzzle crown—often caused by rough handling in truck beds or hunting blinds around McAllen, Weslaco, and Brownsville—will let gas escape unevenly around the base of the bullet, causing unstable flight profiles. Recrowning or re-barreling removes these stress points entirely.
